Do you want to restore the old “balloon” notifications?

As you know Microsoft changed the old balloon like notifications with a modern and organized notifications called “Toast Notifications“.

This shift in how programs notify you will open a world of possibilities, you can disable certain programs from notifying you or enable quiet hours to disable notifications for all programs.

Personally, I like the new Toast notifications, but surely not everyone is a fan of them.

Some users coming from Windows 7 or even Windows XP prefer the old school balloon notifications.

In this tutorial you will learn two methods to recover balloon tips notifications on Windows 10. The first method uses the Registry Editor, the second method works with Group Policy Editor.

Restore Balloon Notifications on Windows 10

Please keep in mind that you can only have one type of notifications. When you enable balloon notifications the toast notifications will be automatically disabled.

These two methods produce the same result which is enabling balloon notifications.

Enable Balloon Tips Notification Using Registry Editor

Open Run using the Windows+R key combination, type in the command regedit and click “OK“.

The Registry Editor‘ window will open up.

Navigate to the following key path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> SOFTWARE -> Policies -> Microsoft -> Windows

Right-click on the key “Windows” and choose “New” > “Key” to create a new key called “Explorer“.

Select the newly created key “Explorer“, right-click on the right side and choose “New” > “DWORD (32-bit) Value” and put in the name “EnableLegacyBalloonNotifications“.

Double-click on “EnableLefacyBalloonNotification” and enter the value “1” instead of “0“. Click “OK“.

You can close the Registry Editor now. Close any opened programs and restart your computer.

The restart is needed for this tip to work!

Use Group Policy Editor to Enable Balloon Notifications

If you don’t want to make changes using the Registry Editor you can follow these steps in the Group Policy Editor to enable balloon notifications in Windows 10. This method is way easier than the first method to follow.

Open Run using Windows+R key combination and type in gpedit.msc, click “OK“.

Please don’t forget that Group Policy Editor is available only on Windows 10 Pro and above versions. If you are running Windows 10 Home, then you will get an error.

In the Local Group Policy Editor window go to “User Configuration” > “Administrative Templates” > “Start Menu and Taskbar“.

In the right side pane, scroll down and double-click on “Disable showing balloon notification as toasts“.

Select “Enabled” and click “OK“.

That’s it! You have successfully enabled Balloon tips notifications in Windows 10. In this case, you don’t have to restart your PC as the changes will take place as soon as you make it.
